ACT superscore calculator and retake planner

Type the section scores from each ACT you have taken. The planner picks your best English, math and reading, averages them the way ACT does, and shows about how many more right answers your target takes, section by section.

VelaBest English, best math, best reading. ACT does the averaging. You pick the section to raise.

Your ACT superscore is the average of your best English, math and reading scores across every ACT you have taken, rounded to the nearest whole number. ACT calculates it for you once you have tested more than once. Science is not part of it, and each college decides whether it uses superscores.

    How ACT builds your superscore

Four rules, each in act.org’s own words. The planner follows all four.

    Best of each section

“The ACT Superscore is the average of a student's best scores from each section across multiple ACT test attempts.”

act.org, ACT Superscore FAQs, read October 30, 2026.

    Add three, divide by 3

“Legacy ACT: add English, math, reading and science, divide by 4. Enhanced ACT: add English, math and reading, divide by 3. Round to the nearest whole number.”

act.org, ACT Superscore FAQs, read October 30, 2026.

    A half rounds up

“Fractions less than one-half are rounded down; fractions one-half or more are rounded up.”

act.org, Understanding your ACT scores, read October 30, 2026.

A tie goes to the newer test

“For Superscores: if section scores are tied, the most recent is used.”

act.org, Sending your ACT scores, read October 30, 2026.

And you do not have to ask for it:

“ACT automatically calculates a Superscore for students who have tested more than once since September 2016.”

act.org, Sending your ACT scores, read October 30, 2026.

For Writing, STEM, ELA and how sending works, read the full guide: ACT superscore on the Enhanced ACT.

    Science and the superscore

“The Superscore Composite now includes only English, Math, and Reading. Science is no longer part of the Composite calculation.”

act.org, ACT Superscore FAQs, read October 30, 2026.

Your best Science score still shows on your superscore report with the date you earned it, and act.org says it is combined with math for your STEM score. That is why the planner lists Science but leaves it out of the number.

    How the right-answer estimate works

ACT turns right answers into a 1 to 36 section score with a conversion table, and every test form gets its own table. The planner uses the practice scale inside Prep36: the curve from an official released Enhanced ACT practice form, stretched across every question in each section. It counts from the bottom of your current score band, so it leans toward more questions, not fewer. Read every number as plus or minus a point, and as a direction, not a promise.

One rule from act.org makes every one of those questions worth an answer:

“Your scores will be based only on the number of questions that you answer correctly; there is no penalty for guessing.”

act.org, ACT test day checklist, read October 30, 2026.

    Frequently asked questions

How is the ACT superscore calculated?
act.org says to take your best English, math and reading scores from any of your test dates, add them, divide by 3 and round to the nearest whole number. Fractions of one half or more round up. The planner on this page follows that rule.
Does Science count in the ACT superscore?
Not in the Composite. act.org says the Superscore Composite now includes only English, math and reading. Your best Science score still appears on your report and combines with math for your STEM score.
What if I got the same section score on two test dates?
act.org says that when section scores are tied, the most recent one is used. The planner marks the later test as your best in that case.
Do all colleges accept the ACT superscore?
No. act.org says not every college superscores the ACT and tells students to check the test score policy on each school's admissions website. If a page is unclear, ask that admissions office.
How accurate is the more right answers estimate?
It is an estimate. ACT scales every test form separately, and the planner uses Prep36's practice scale, so read each number as plus or minus a point. It counts from the bottom of your current score band, so it leans toward more questions, not fewer.
