How ACT scoring works

Every ACT section starts with a raw score: the number of questions you answered correctly. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so your raw score only ever goes up by answering more questions right, and guessing on questions you cannot finish always beats leaving them blank.

ACT then converts each raw score into a scaled score from 1 to 36 using a conversion table built for that specific test form. On the current Enhanced ACT, the sections are:

• English: 50 questions in 35 minutes
• Math: 45 questions in 50 minutes, with four answer choices per question
• Reading: 36 questions in 40 minutes
• Science: optional, 40 questions in 40 minutes, reported as a separate STEM-related score

Your composite is the average of the English, Math, and Reading scaled scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. Raw score vs scaled score

The two numbers answer different questions. The raw score answers "how many did I get right?" The scaled score answers "what does that performance mean on a standard 1 to 36 yardstick?" Scaling exists so that a 27 earned on one test date means the same thing as a 27 earned on another, even though the two test forms were not identical in difficulty.

That is why you cannot convert with simple percentages. Missing five questions in Reading does not cost the same as missing five in Math, and the top of the scale is tighter than the middle: going from raw 44 to 45 in Math can move you a full point, while a single question in the middle of the curve often moves nothing.

Why the curve changes from test to test

ACT equates every form, which means each test's conversion table is adjusted for that form's exact difficulty. A slightly harder Math section gets a slightly friendlier curve, and a slightly easier one gets a stricter curve. The goal is fairness across dates, and the practical effect for you is this: any calculator, including this one, is an estimate. Ours uses the representative curve from the Prep36 practice tests, which is built to behave like a typical Enhanced ACT form. Expect real score reports to land within about a point of the estimate, and treat anything you read as unofficial until it comes from your MyACT account.

Enhanced ACT raw score to scaled score conversion tables

These are the conversion tables this calculator uses, printed in full so you can read them without running the tool. Raw score means the number of questions you answered correctly in that section. Scaled score is the 1 to 36 number that appears on a score report.

These use a representative curve, so treat them as close estimates. ACT builds a slightly different conversion table for every test form, so a real score report can differ from these by about a point. Only ACT publishes the official table for a given form.

Composite is the average of the English, Math and Reading scaled scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. Science is reported separately and averages with Math to give the STEM score. Prep36 is not affiliated with ACT, Inc.

What your estimated score means

Once you have a number, context matters more than the digit itself. A useful way to read it:

• Versus your target schools. Look up the middle 50 percent range of admitted students at each college on your list. Landing at or above the top of that range makes your score an asset.
• Versus your baseline. If this is your first practice test, the number is a starting line, not a verdict. Most students improve meaningfully between their first timed test and test day.
• Section by section. The composite hides detail. A 27 built from 31 English and 23 Math points at a very different study plan than three balanced 27s. Our guide on improving your ACT score walks through reading a section breakdown.

How to raise the number you just calculated

The composite moves when raw scores move, and raw scores move with targeted practice. The pattern that works: take a full timed test, find the sections and question types where points leaked, drill those specifically, then test again. Because the composite is an average of three sections, one improved section lifts the whole number. And if you test more than once, colleges that superscore will combine your best sections across dates.
