ACT Science practice is really practice at reading data fast and thinking clearly under time pressure. The section does not test facts you memorized in biology or chemistry class. It hands you charts, graphs, and experiment descriptions and asks you to interpret them. Starting with the enhanced ACT rolled out in 2025, the Science section is optional. The three required sections are English, Math, and Reading, and your Composite score is the average of just those three. Science, when you choose to take it, is scored separately from 1 to 36 and contributes to a STEM-related score rather than your Composite.
So should you take it? For many students the answer is yes. Some colleges and scholarship programs still want a Science score, and STEM-leaning applicants can use a strong Science result to stand out. The Science section is built around three skill areas, and every question maps to one of them:
Passages come in a few recognizable formats: data representation (charts and graphs with short intros), research summaries (one or more related experiments), and conflicting viewpoints (two or more scientists disagreeing about the same phenomenon). Knowing the format in front of you tells you where to spend your time.
This is the single most important thing to understand, and it changes how you should study. The ACT Science section does not require you to recall facts from your science courses. Almost everything you need to answer a question is printed on the page in the figures and text. When a topic like photosynthesis or radioactive decay appears, the passage gives you the context you need to work with it.
That means your prep time is better spent on skills than on content review. You are training yourself to find the right graph quickly, read axes and units correctly, track variables across multiple tables, and resist answer choices that sound scientific but are not actually supported by the data. A small amount of general familiarity with basic terms and the metric system helps, but you are not memorizing formulas or definitions.

Every ACT section, including Science, is scored from 1 to 36. What counts as a strong result depends entirely on the schools you are targeting. As a rough guide, a score around 20 is near the national average, 24 and up is competitive for many colleges, 30 and up is strong, and 34 and up is elite. Because Science does not feed your Composite, treat your goal for it as school-specific: aim for the number the programs on your list want to see. Then reverse-engineer your practice around that target, focusing on the question categories where you lose the most points.
