The ACT Science section confuses plenty of students, and not because the science is hard. Most of it is not science knowledge at all: it is reading charts, tables, and experiments under time pressure. On the Enhanced ACT, Science is now optional and no longer counts toward your composite score, which changes how you should think about it. The Enhanced ACT, which rolled out in 2025, made two big changes to the Science section. First, it is now optional. You choose whether to add it when you register. Second, it no longer factors into your composite. Your composite score is the average of English, Math, and Reading only.
If you take Science, it is scored from 1 to 36 like the other sections and reported as a separate STEM-related score. Colleges can see it, but it does not raise or lower the composite number most admissions offices look at first.

Every ACT Science passage falls into one of three types, and each rewards a different approach.
Knowing the flavor before you dive in tells you how to spend your time: figures first for the first two types, text first for Conflicting Viewpoints.
Here is the most freeing fact about ACT Science: it is mostly a data interpretation test. The passage gives you nearly everything you need. Your job is to find it, read it correctly, and match it to the question.
A small number of questions on each test do lean on background knowledge, the kind covered in a typical high school biology, chemistry, or physics class. Think basic ideas like what a control group is, how density works, or what photosynthesis produces. You do not need to cram content the way you would for a science final.
So do not spend your prep rereading textbooks. Spend it practicing with charts and experiments, and keep a light review list of core terms. If a question seems to require deep expertise, reread the passage: the answer is almost always sitting in a figure or a sentence you skimmed past. That is also why practice pays off so directly here. You are training a skill, not memorizing a subject.
The highest-value habit in ACT Science takes five seconds per figure: before you read anything else, read the axes.
For every graph, note what the x-axis measures, what the y-axis measures, and the units on each. For tables, read the column headers. Then glance at the overall shape: is the line going up, going down, leveling off? That quick orientation answers a surprising number of questions by itself.

Watch for the classic traps: mismatched units between the question and the figure, axes that do not start at zero, and two figures with similar labels. Slowing down for two seconds on the axes prevents the fast, wrong answer.
Forty questions in 40 minutes sounds like one minute per question, but the real math is friendlier: straightforward graph-reading questions take well under a minute once you have oriented yourself to the figures.
