What is a 20 ACT score?

A 20 ACT composite ranks at the 63rd percentile nationally, meaning about 63% of recent ACT-tested high school graduates scored at or below a 20. That is ACT's own national rank for tests taken between September 2026 and August 2027.

At a 20 there is real room in every section, and the fastest gains usually come from whole topics rather than from careless errors. Scoring about 20 in each of the three scored sections allows roughly 58 wrong answers in total. This page breaks that down per section, shows where the cheapest next point is at this score, and lists where a 20 actually stands at real colleges.

What a 20 costs in questions

A 20 in each of English, Math and Reading means getting roughly this many right, and no more than this many wrong:

SectionRightAllowed wrong
English30 of 5020 wrong
Math23 of 4522 wrong
Reading20 of 3616 wrong

That is 58 questions of margin across the three scored sections. Science is reported separately on the Enhanced ACT and does not count toward the composite.

Your composite is the rounded average of the three section scores, so an uneven split can reach the same composite at a different price. This row describes the even case.

Prep36's own estimates from the published scoring information. ACT equates every form separately, so real cutoffs move by about a question either way.

Four ways to build a 20

A composite is the average of English, Math and Reading, so the same 20 can come from very different section shapes. If one section is your strength, the other two carry less. Here is what each shape actually demands in questions answered correctly.

If your shape isE / M / REnglish rightMath rightReading rightTotal
Even across the board20 / 20 / 2030 of 5023 of 4520 of 3673 of 131
Math is your strength18 / 24 / 1827 of 5027 of 4518 of 3672 of 131
English and Reading carry it23 / 16 / 2136 of 5014 of 4521 of 3671 of 131
Reading is your best section18 / 18 / 2427 of 5020 of 4525 of 3672 of 131

All four routes land within 2 questions of each other, so at a 20 the shape of your score matters much less than the total. Play to whichever section is already strongest.

Raw targets use a representative conversion curve, so treat them as close estimates. ACT builds a slightly different curve for every test form. Science is optional on the Enhanced ACT and is reported separately, so it does not enter the composite.

What it takes to get from 20 to 23

Three more composite points is 13 more questions right in total: English 6, Math 3, Reading 4.

Framed as points it sounds like a different student. Framed as 13 questions it is a number of weeks of specific work, which is what it actually is.

Where a 20 stands at the colleges Prep36 covers

Of the 45 colleges with score data on this site, a 20 sits at or above the top quarter at 0, inside the middle 50% at 5, and below the bottom quarter at 40.

At or above the 75th percentile

None in the set Prep36 covers.

Inside the middle 50%

Ranges are the published 25th to 75th percentile composites for admitted students. They describe a class, not a cutoff, and no page can tell you your odds at a school.

Where the cheapest point is at a 20

The conversion curve is not evenly spaced. At a 20 the same single extra correct answer is worth a different amount depending on which section it lands in:

SectionYou are atOne more right
Math23 right+1 scale point
Reading20 right+1 scale point

At this score Math and Reading are tied as the cheapest place to gain, at 1 point per extra correct answer. You currently have the most margin in Math (22 allowed wrong) and the least in Reading (16).

The curve is coarsest near the top of the scale, which is why a single question can move a section score by two points there and by one in the middle. These are Prep36 estimates, not a published cutoff.
